A blogger’s dream: the Insta360 Luna Ultra got 8K, a gimbal and an AI operator

Insta360 has taken an important step into a new segment of devices. Presented together with the world-famous brand Leica, the flagship gimbal camera Insta360 Luna Ultra takes the quality of mobile content to a cinematic level thanks to recording in ultra-high resolution 8K, a unique dual camera and innovative control with a detachable display.

The novelty is designed as an advanced tool for bloggers, videographers and creators of quality content, for whom the standard capabilities of smartphone cameras are not enough. This is the first classic camera for Insta360, equipped with a full-fledged integrated three-axis gimbal and a premium optical scheme.

Optics characteristics

The main technological pride of Insta360 Luna Ultra is the dual-lens shooting system:

  • Main module: Large 1-inch sensor with 8K resolution and branded Leica Summicron optics. It captures maximum details in any lighting conditions.
  • Telephoto lens: Auxiliary module based on 1/1.3-inch matrix with 12x digital zoom (of which 6x zoom works absolutely without loss of detail).

Video is recorded in 8K format at 30 frames per second. Deep integration with the Dolby Vision standard and the proprietary 10-bit I-Log color profile has been implemented. The profile offers exceptional flexibility at the stage of professional production, preserving detail in complex areas of the frame due to a wide dynamic range of 14 stops.

For creating static photo frames, the camera provides a resolution of up to 37 MP, and the advanced panoramic stitching algorithm allows you to create detailed 200 MP panoramas.

Deep Track 5.0 AI features

The hardware mechanical three-axis stabilizer is complemented by modern software electronic stabilization systems. There should be no frame misses thanks to the intelligent functions of tracking moving targets – software based on Deep Track 5.0 recognizes people, group subjects, automatically keeps the shooting object exactly in the center of the frame and takes over the intelligent framing of scenes.

The developers also provided a conceptually new solution – the display. The camera is equipped with a 2-inch OLED display with touch controls. The display is completely removable: it acts not only as a monitor for image quality control, but also as an ergonomic wireless remote control for full-fledged remote shooting at a distance of up to 20 meters.

Benefits for professional content writers

A joint collaboration with a German optical concern provided users with original options – Leica Natural, Leica Vivid, as well as Leica Chrome. The system meets all the strict broadcast standards of picture coding with full ACES compatibility.

Features of seamless video editing include synchronization of several devices using built-in timecodes (completely ready-made profiles for Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro), and automated templates with neural network capabilities in the official application will speed up the publication of the finished clip as much as possible.

Along with a modest total weight of only 200 grams, the camera has a built-in battery of 1550 mAh. On one charge, the camera will last up to 4 hours of continuous shooting without any problems. The accelerated charging function restores the first 80% in a record-breaking 23 minutes.

For stutter-free high-speed media streaming, the Luna Ultra has built-in 47GB of fast-responsive non-volatile memory and a microSD card slot for up to 1TB.

Release date and price

For everyone who wants to become the owner of a premium mobile shooting studio, the company has outlined the official date of release into retail supply channels — sales of the new Insta360 Luna Ultra will start on June 10. The retail price of the portable 8K video camera with AI for the North American market has been announced by the developers at the level of about 31,570 hryvnias ($770).
