Theft in eSports hotels: In China, RAM thieves were convicted

In China, law enforcement officers detained two suspects involved in a series of thefts of computer components. Criminals raided rooms in hotels specializing in the eSports segment, where powerful gaming PCs are provided.

Details of the criminal scheme

The criminal activity began in May at the initiative of a resident of the city of Shihetzi named Li. At first, he independently stole the memory modules from his number, and later involved an accomplice named Chen in the case. Over the next two weeks, they committed a series of robberies at several eSports hotels.

Scale of theft and cost of damages

The actions of the criminals were described as a “crazy rampage”. In total, they managed to steal 16 memory sticks. Stolen property was sold through online marketplaces and local stores. The total profit from crimes was 13,200 yuan ($1,950 / €1,800, which is equivalent to 80,500 hryvnias).

Disclosure of criminals

The police were called after new residents started complaining en masse about malfunctioning appliances that simply refused to start. The hotel staff, after inspecting the computers, discovered the lack of memory, and then contacted the law enforcement officers. During the investigation, the guilt of the suspects was established.

Why is this case unique

Experts note that the theft of RAM is not a common form of profit due to the relatively low cost of components, but such incidents cause serious damage to the image of hotels and inconvenience to guests. Currently, the investigation in the case continues, and both suspects remain in custody.
