The FBI has for the first time shown a cyber training ground that simulates the operation of an entire city

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation for the first time demonstrated in detail the capabilities of the Kinetic Cyber Range complex – a specialized center for training cyber security specialists, conducting digital investigations and simulating large-scale cyber attacks.

The facility is located in Huntsville, Alabama. Although the complex started operating last year, until recently its infrastructure remained closed to the general public. Now the FBI has published video materials that allow you to assess the scale of the project and its technical equipment.

A complete model of a modern city

Kinetic Cyber ​​​​Range covers an area of ​​more than two thousand square meters and is not just a set of computer laboratories, but a detailed model of a small American settlement.

Residential buildings, a medical facility, a gas station, shopping facilities, a data center and other elements of the city’s infrastructure are located on the territory of the complex. All objects are connected by digital networks and interact with each other in the same way as it happens in a real urban environment.

This approach allows specialists to study the consequences of cyber incidents not so much on individual devices, but at the level of entire infrastructure systems, where a failure in one segment can cause a chain reaction in other parts of the network.

Isolated environment for dangerous experiments

The key feature of the landfill is complete isolation from the external Internet. This allows professionals to safely launch malware, test new attack methods, and observe their propagation without risk to real users and organizations.

Such an environment allows you to simulate scenarios that cannot be reproduced under normal conditions. These are both local incidents and complex attacks on large infrastructure facilities.

The FBI notes that the training ground is used not only for training employees, but also for studying new threats, analyzing malicious programs and developing methods to counter modern cybercriminals.

From cars to critical infrastructure objects

The capabilities of the complex allow you to reproduce a wide range of scenarios. Specialists can investigate the hacking of car infotainment systems, attacks on medical institutions, the compromise of corporate networks and the penetration of critical infrastructure facilities.

In addition, the test site is used to simulate the effects of attacks on energy systems, users’ home networks, and other digital services that modern society depends on.

Such scenarios are becoming increasingly relevant amid the growing number of attacks on government institutions, healthcare organizations, transportation infrastructure, and the energy sector around the world.

More than 200 servers for testing attacks and defenses

A separate part of the complex is its own data center equipped with more than two hundred servers. This infrastructure is used to conduct malware experiments, test network penetration techniques, and evaluate the effectiveness of current defenses.

Specialists can intentionally infect servers with various types of malicious code, analyze its behavior and work out incident response mechanisms. This approach makes it possible to bring the training scenarios as close as possible to the real conditions faced by law enforcement agencies and information security specialists.

In essence, the Kinetic Cyber Range is a digital copy of a modern city, where you can safely reproduce the consequences of large-scale cyber attacks and learn how to protect critical systems without threatening the real world.
