Sony under fire: refusal to sell PlayStation discs could lead to antitrust investigation.
16.07.26
Sony Corporation’s decision to completely stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games by January 2028 has resulted in serious legal consequences. An official antitrust complaint is being prepared in Mexico against the Japanese giant.
Nowhere more serious
Deputy of the Federal Parliament Iraís Reyes and Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio are preparing an appeal to the National Commission on Economic Competition. Politicians are convinced that the company’s policy is aimed at creating a monopoly in the field of digital content distribution. The main claim is that users will be completely deprived of the right to choose the purchase channel – all games will have to be purchased only from the PlayStation Store.
Possible consequences of canceling discs
- Destroying competition between retail chains.
- Disappearance of the market for used games and the possibility of exchanging physical copies.
- Full digital control: Sony will be able to remove games from users’ libraries, as it previously did with 500 movies and series, without compensation.
- Access issues for users with unstable or slow internet, which is critical for a number of Mexican regions.
Who supports criticism and should we be afraid of the consequences?
The situation went beyond a local Mexican protest. Renowned game designer Hideo Kojima has openly expressed his disappointment with Sony’s plans. The gaming community is also showing displeasure by massively abandoning subscriptions to the PS Plus service. At the moment, Sony has not officially commented on the upcoming antitrust review, but the pressure from the authorities and the audience may significantly change the strategy of the corporation until 2028.
