Sony announced God of War Laufey spin-off about Kratos’s wife: the game is almost ready

Insider Jason Schreier revealed the timing of the release

At the State of Play presentation, Sony and developers from Santa Monica announced an ambitious exclusive God of War Laufey, dedicated to the wife of Kratos.

The new title will be a full-fledged spin-off of the famous Scandinavian series God of War. The main character of the adventure will be Fei (Laufei) – the deceased wife of the Spartan Kratos. According to insider sources, the first drafts and early work on the game began about ten years ago, that is, in parallel with the preparation of the 2018 God of War reboot. This explains why the project is currently in the final stage of readiness.

Plot: new mythologies and kingdoms

The events of this story take place in parallel with the action of God of War (2018). After her death, Faye goes to a special otherworldly realm reserved for divine beings. Her key task is to restore and protect the destiny of Kratos and their common son Atreus, so that the prophecy will be fulfilled.

The creators have prepared a grandiose scale. In her afterlife, Faye will face villains from different cultures and eras. The developers plan to go far beyond exclusively Scandinavian mythology, showing elements of Asian beliefs and ancient Egyptian culture.

Gameplay features

The gameplay will offer a look at the series from a female perspective. Laufey has outstanding combat skills using a variety of weapons and his own magical abilities. Numerous allies will help her to pass difficult tests, both new and original characters from the other world, and old acquaintances from past games of the franchise.

Among the fans of the series, a lot of controversy has already flared up around one of the key features of the satellites — the so-called amorphous cube that talks and helps Faye. A number of gamers felt that this element stood out too much from the overall serious style, although others asked to wait for the release before giving final marks.

Release date

According to an authoritative opinion from Jason Schreier, the release of the game is planned for the first quarter of 2027 – the most likely window is called February or March. Such a close launch of an almost completed project is solely due to the strategy of avoiding direct competition with the upcoming GTA VI.  To ensure sales, many publishers postpone releases until the beginning of the year. The exact and final release date of Sony’s God of War Laufey should be announced by the publisher in the near future.
