Resident Evil Requiem breaks sales records – 6 million copies in 17 days
20.03.26
Capcom’s new survival horror game, Resident Evil Requiem, is quickly gaining popularity among gamers. Just 17 days after its release, the company announced that it had sold 6 million copies worldwide, a record for the entire franchise. Last week, Capcom announced that it had sold 5 million copies in its first week. Since the release of the first Resident Evil in 1996, the entire series has sold more than 183 million copies.
Reasons Behind the Success and Game Features
Capcom attributes Requiem’s popularity to a combination of factors. These include an extensive marketing campaign and a carefully designed gameplay structure that appeals to both newcomers and longtime fans of the series. The developers introduced multiple difficulty levels, making the game more accessible to a broader audience while preserving the tense atmosphere typical of survival-horror.
The company also confirmed that support for the game is only just beginning. Story expansions are in development, and upcoming updates will include a photo mode and a mini-game, the details of which are currently being kept under wraps.
Preparing for the Series’ 30th Anniversary
The record-breaking sales coincide with preparations for Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2026. Capcom plans to hold a range of themed events, including a collaboration with Universal Studios Japan and orchestral concerts in Japan, Europe, and the United States. The company has indicated that special attractions and events related to the game will be organized at the theme park.
Sales and Capcom Rankings

Despite the strong start, Resident Evil Requiem still needs to sell several million more copies to enter the Platinum Titles list, which ranks the ten most successful games in Capcom’s history. The leader remains the Resident Evil 2 remake, with 18.2 million copies sold. Other recent series releases, including Resident Evil 3, also appear in the top ten, with Resident Evil 3 closing the list at 10.9 million copies. If current sales trends continue, Requiem could soon secure a place among these titles.
Modding Community and Critical Reception
Alongside its commercial success, an active modding community has emerged around the game, particularly on PC. Users are creating both gameplay mods that alter or increase the challenge of the game and humorous modifications. One popular mod transforms the main character Leon S. Kennedy’s car into the Patty Wagon from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
Critics have generally given positive reviews, though they note a limited number of new ideas. In a GameSpot review, journalist Phil Hornshaw stated that the game relies heavily on past successes of the series but successfully reproduces its key elements.
Considering the rapid sales and planned updates, Resident Evil Requiem has the potential to become one of Capcom’s most notable releases in recent years, particularly in light of the series’ anniversary and ongoing interest in the survival-horror genre.
