Marvel’s Wolverine will surprise with its level of violence – ESRB reveals details
05.08.26
The highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games is poised to rival The Last of Us 2 as the most violent title from Sony’s internal studios. According to data from the North American rating board ESRB, the project has received an M (17+) rating, confirming the presence of high-intensity aggressive content.
Marvel’s Wolverine plot
Marvel’s Wolverine is an action-adventure game based on the story of the famous mutant James Logan. The gameplay is presented from a third-person perspective, with dynamic combat featuring the protagonist’s legendary claws and unique superpowers as the core mechanics.
The combat system features piercing, slashing, and hacking attacks. A key mechanic is the rage mode, allowing Wolverine to slow down time to execute devastating attack chains or spectacular finishers. Players will face both standard soldiers and robotic enemies.
Rating details and gore features
The ESRB decision to assign an ‘M’ rating is based on several factors documented by the commission’s specialists:
- Abundant gore, scenes of dismemberment, and decapitation of enemies.
- Visualizations of severed limbs and damaged body parts in game locations.
- Characters literally tearing through opponents during brutal cutscenes.
- Use of profanity and references to illicit substances.
- Elements of nudity: in some scenes, the bare buttocks of one of the characters are briefly visible.
Release date
Marvel’s Wolverine will be released on September 15 exclusively for PlayStation 5. Marvel’s Wolverine is clearly aimed at an adult audience and promises to be one of Sony’s darkest and most brutal titles. However, the developers have included settings to reduce the amount of gore, allowing for a more comfortable experience for some players.
