LG Display Unveils FLiPP OLED Tech to Revolutionize Screen Manufacturing
21.08.26
LG Display has achieved a technological breakthrough in display manufacturing by unveiling its innovative FLiPP OLED pixel-forming technology. The company showcased the novelty at the IMID 2026 industry exhibition in South Korea. The key feature of the technology is the complete elimination of Fine Metal Mask (FMM), which has been an industry standard for decades.
What Is FLiPP OLED
The traditional method of creating OLED panels relies on using an FMM mask as a stencil for layered deposition of red, green, and blue (RGB) organic materials onto a substrate. This approach significantly complicates the creation of large screens and imposes technical limits on matrix capabilities. The FLiPP technology changes this approach by allowing RGB materials to be sequentially fixed in place, followed by photolithography and ultraviolet irradiation.

The aperture ratio of panels manufactured using the new method increases by approximately 55% compared to the outdated FMM process.
Key Technical Specifications and Advantages
Removing unnecessary components allows for significant improvements in key image quality and durability metrics:
- Brightness: 1.6x higher.
- Panel lifespan: 2.4x longer.
- Energy consumption: reduced by 13%.
Moreover, the production process has become significantly more efficient. Using seamless glass substrates without the need for sectioning during pixel formation has allowed for a 64% increase in material utilization efficiency compared to any existing processes. This not only reduces production waste but also lowers the final manufacturing cost of the displays.
Prospects and Implementation Timeline
The versatility of FLiPP technology allows it to be used for creating displays ranging from 1 to 100 inches, including matrices for augmented and virtual reality headsets. The first consumer devices to use the new panel will likely be modern tablets and monitors. The manufacturer has not yet announced exact dates for the release of commercial products featuring this technology.
