iOS 27 bets on AI editing: Apple strengthens “Photos” with generative tools
02.05.26
Apple is preparing a major ecosystem update in which generative AI tools for working with images play a key role. In iOS 27, as well as in iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, a new Apple Intelligence Tools section will appear. It should transform the standard “Photos” application from a simple gallery into a full-fledged editor with functions that were previously only available in specialized services.
Generative editing: frame expansion and working with composition
One of the main innovations will be the Extend tool — the “outpainting” technology that allows you to draw an image outside the original frame. Algorithms analyze the edges of the image and generate missing elements, preserving lighting, textures and the overall structure of the image. This is especially useful in situations where the frame is cropped or the composition needs “air”.
Enhance and Reframe will complement it. Enhance goes beyond normal auto-correction: the system will take into account the context of the image and more deeply process the parameters of the image, including light, color and detail. Reframe, in turn, will allow you to change the composition after shooting – adjust the angle, perspective and location of objects in the frame.

Special emphasis is placed on working with so-called spatial photos, which are designed for viewing in mixed reality devices. Here, changing the perspective and depth of the image becomes not just a convenient function, but a key tool.
Limitations and technological difficulties
Despite the ambitious plans, using these features comes with a number of challenges. According to Bloomberg, Apple has not yet managed to achieve quality that meets internal standards. As a result, some features may appear later or in a limited form at the start.
Skepticism is also strengthened by comparison with the current solutions of competitors. For example, the Clean Up function in the Apple ecosystem is still inferior to tools like Magic Editor from Google: when deleting objects, it often leaves artifacts and does not always correctly restore the background.
Balance between quality and implementation speed
Apple usually bets on local data processing and privacy, trying to do most of the calculations right on the device. This complicates development, but allows you to minimize the transfer of user data to the cloud.
At the same time, the market has already formed high expectations: users are used to the fact that AI tools work quickly and efficiently. In such conditions, Apple’s cautious approach begins to be perceived not as an important position, but as an attempt to catch up with more aggressive competitors.
