Formula 1 and artificial intelligence: how algorithms are becoming a key player in the race

While the spectators follow the struggle on the track and discuss the behavior of the cars in the corners, inside the Formula 1 teams, the very logic of preparing for the race is gradually changing. Engineering units are increasingly relying on both classic telemetry and simulation systems, but also on artificial intelligence tools that are beginning to participate in real-time data analysis. According to Ampere Analysis, teams have signed new deals with AI developers in recent months, and technology companies have established themselves as one of the championship’s key financial and technology partners.

Technology partnerships go beyond sponsorships

The role of IT companies in Formula 1 is gradually shifting from traditional sponsorship to deeper integration into team processes. The language is no longer limited to the placement of brands on cars – increasingly, technology partners gain access to data and participate in the development of decisions that affect the strategy of the race.

The amount of investment from the technology sector has grown significantly over the last season and reached hundreds of millions of dollars. These funds are directed not only to marketing, but also to the implementation of computing systems that allow teams to process large amounts of data during races.

One ​​example was the Williams team’s collaboration with the Anthropic company. The partnership plans to use Claude’s language model to analyze the team’s internal processes, including logistics, training and strategic planning elements under time-limited conditions between sessions. Within the team, such tools are considered as a way to speed up information processing and increase the efficiency of decisions.

From analytics to independent algorithms

The use of artificial intelligence in Formula 1 is gradually moving to a new level. In a number of teams, systems are not limited to passive data processing, but begin to form their own recommendations.

Oracle Red Bull Racing is testing an approach in which algorithms analyze telemetry, weather conditions and car parameters, then offer engineers ready-made solutions in real-time. This format of work allows you to react more quickly to changes in the situation on the track and shorten the time between analysis and action.

Similar processes are observed in other participants of the championship. Aston Martin works with CoreWeave for high-performance computing, while McLaren uses Google Gemini generative models for data analysis and strategic scenario development. The general trend is to gradually transform AI from an auxiliary tool into a full-fledged element of the engineering structure of teams.

Budget constraints strengthen the role of algorithms

One of the factors accelerating the use of artificial intelligence is financial constraints. The current budget limit forces teams to strictly allocate resources, reducing costs for routine processes.

In terms of algorithms, he takes part of the tasks of analyzing regulations, processing telemetry and modeling racing situations. This allows engineers to focus on the more complex and creative aspects of development where automation cannot yet replace human involvement.

Formula 1 as a test environment for AI

Farmula-1 itself is actively developing technology in parallel with the teams. Together with Amazon Web Services, machine learning systems are used to process broadcast data, create graphics and build probabilistic models of events on the track, including overtaking predictions.

Artificial intelligence is also used to form visual and analytical elements of telecasts, which is gradually changing the format of the viewing experience. The racing series actually turns into a testing ground for data processing technologies under conditions of high speed and high uncertainty.

By the end of the season, the volume of sponsorship deals in Formula 1 reached several billion dollars, which puts the championship on a par with the biggest sports leagues in the world.
