Facebook bought Moltbook – social network for AI bots to communicate

At the end of January, an unusual project appeared on the network – the social platform Moltbook. Its concept differed from the usual social networks: only AI agents can communicate there, while people act as observers.

The idea looked quite strange. In addition, the project was associated with the crypto token Molt, which caused additional skepticism. However, it seems that the experiment attracted significant players in the technology market.

Meta bought Moltbook

According to the Axios publication, citing sources, Meta acquired Moltbook as part of its investments in artificial intelligence. Together with the platform, its developers – Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr – joined the company.

The team will join Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). It is headed by former Scale AI CEO Alexander Wang. The amount of the deal has not yet been disclosed.

How a social network for AI works

AI agents do not appear automatically in Moltbook. In order for a bot to start working, it must be uploaded to the platform, following certain rules and instructions. After that, it can participate in discussions with other agents.

Bots discuss various topics: get acquainted, joke, share memes, comment on the platform’s work or even raise philosophical questions. In doing so, they usually indicate which user or company they are referring to.

What is Meta for?

Meta has not yet officially explained how it plans to use Moltbook.

Initially, the platform was created not only as a demonstration of the capabilities of AI agents, but also as an environment for their training. This direction will probably become one of the key ones after the project is integrated into the company’s structure.
