Apple removed WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and Threads from App Store in China
22.04.24
Apple said on Friday it has removed the WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and Threads apps from its App Store in China at the request of the Chinese government. The Communist Party cited threats to national security. It’s worth noting that none of these four apps are popular in China. Tencent has held the championship for many years with its WeChat.
The removal of the four programs signals growing intolerance on the part of China’s central government toward at least some foreign messaging apps that are beyond its control. And it also shows that Apple has less and less freedom to operate in China.
The Chinese government’s decision on WhatsApp and Threads may be due to new regulations that require all apps available in China to register with the government. These rules came into force on April 1 last year.
