YouTube background playback without Premium: how Edge Canary found a way around restrictions

The Microsoft Edge browser from Microsoft in its Canary test build has enabled background playback of videos from YouTube even without a Premium subscription

YouTube tightens restrictions, but workarounds keep emerging

YouTube has recently been actively restricting methods used to bypass paid features, including background video playback without a subscription. Third-party browsers previously lost this capability, and Google representatives confirmed that this was an intentional change rather than a bug.

Despite this, browser developers continue to search for technical solutions that restore familiar user functionality.

Edge Canary restores background playback

According to insider Leopeva64, mobile Edge Canary already supports YouTube background playback. Videos continue playing even when users switch tabs or return to the device home screen.

In effect, the browser maintains an active media session, bypassing restrictions imposed by YouTube on third-party apps and web access.

Additional audio control features

Microsoft has also introduced several audio-related improvements in Edge:

  • audio playback indicators on tabs
  • display of active audio streams in the tab switcher interface
  • the ability to quickly mute or unmute individual sites via the context menu

What this means in practice

The feature is currently available only in an experimental browser version, but it highlights the ongoing tension between the YouTube platform and browser developers. YouTube continues to tighten monetization controls and restrictions, while browsers attempt to preserve convenient usage scenarios without a subscription.
