Xiaomi Smart Storage UPS: compact data protection

The company Xiaomi provided a non-standard solution to ensure uninterrupted power supply of network storage. The novelty, named Smart Storage UPS, visually resembles a compact power supply unit for a laptop, but inside it hides an effective data protection tool in the event of power outages.

Positioning

Xiaomi Smart Storage UPS is a miniature uninterruptible power supply designed specifically for network storage (NAS) and routers. The device eliminates the risk of data loss during sudden power outages, allowing the NAS system to safely shut down and park the hard drive heads.

Features and capabilities of the system

The main technical advantage of the novelty is the refusal to use heavy lead-acid batteries in favor of modern lithium-ion cells.

  • Total battery capacity: 18 Wh (equivalent to 4800 mAh).
  • Principle of operation: Plug and Play — the device is plugged directly into an outlet, and the output cable is connected to the drive.
  • Functionality: automatic restart of connected equipment after restoration of power supply.

Despite the high level of autonomy, the manufacturer has not yet disclosed the maximum output power indicator, which limits the scope of the device to low-power network nodes.

Particulars of use

The device is distinguished by a form factor that is as close as possible to a regular network adapter. Unlike bulky UPS, this solution is ideal for compact server racks. An important nuance is the absence of the need for complex configuration: basic protection is carried out without USB integration, which makes installation as simple as possible.

Release date and price

At the moment, the gadget is available for purchase in the Chinese market. The price is 349 yuan.

Buying this UPS will make sense for owners of NAS servers or smart home systems that need insurance against sudden power outages. Thanks to the lithium-ion battery, the device occupies a minimum of space, performing the function of an intelligent fuse. Nevertheless, before buying it is important to take into account the lack of data on the support of powerful computer hardware, since the device is primarily intended for energy-efficient network equipment.
