Xiaomi Redmi K90 Max: a smartphone with active cooling that tries to remove the main barrier of mobile gaming

Xiaomi presented the Redmi K90 Max – a device that stands out not only by “iron”, but also by the idea itself. This is the first smartphone of the brand that uses a full-fledged active cooling system with a mechanical fan, which remains a rarity for the mobile segment.

Active cooling as an engineering experiment

At the heart of the system is a compact fan with a diameter of 18.1 mm, combined with a radiator unit and heat removal channels. According to Xiaomi, this solution should eliminate the key problem of modern flagships – a sharp drop in performance during long-term loads due to overheating.

Declared characteristics look ambitious: a decrease in the temperature of the chip by about 10°C in 100 seconds of operation with noise no higher than 32 dB. The system passed long resource tests equivalent to 50,000 hours of operation.

Special emphasis is placed on reliability: for buyers in China who make a purchase before May 5, the cooling module receives an extended 6-year warranty and free service, including dust cleaning.

Mobile PC level performance

The heart of the Redmi K90 Max is the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor, complemented by a separate D2 graphics accelerator responsible for gaming performance and AI graphics optimization.

The screen is an AMOLED with a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz, an extended color gamut of DCI-P3 and a peak brightness of up to 3500 nits. Depending on the configuration, 12 or 16 GB of LPDDR5X Ultra RAM and a UFS 4.1 drive are used, which ensures fast system response even under heavy load.

Gamer optimization at the level of the entire system

The manufacturer made a bet on complex game optimization. Redmi K90 Max is equipped with a highly sensitive 400 Hz gyroscope, which improves control accuracy in dynamic games.

The touch layer of the screen is additionally adapted to game scenarios, and the three-microphone system is oriented for use in horizontal mode – for voice chat during games.

Communication is stabilized by two proprietary Surge T1+ chips, which are responsible for improving signal quality and reducing network delays

Autonomy without compromises

The smartphone is equipped with a battery of 8550 mAh – significantly above the average for the flagship segment. 100W fast charging is supported, as well as 22.5W reverse conductive charging, which allows you to use the device as a power source for accessories.

Cameras, sound and protection of flagship level

The main camera received a resolution of 50 MP. Sound is handled by a Bose-tuned stereo system with an emphasis on symmetrical channel distribution.

Also present is an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner and a linear X-axis vibration motor for more accurate tactile feedback.

Despite the presence of an active fan, the device is protected against water and dust at once by three standards — IP66, IP68 and IP69, which looks atypical for a smartphone with mechanical elements inside the case.

Price and positioning

Redmi K90 Max is offered in several versions:

  • 12/256 GB – about $510
  • 12/512 GB – $585
  • 16/256 GB – $560
  • 16/512 GB – $630
  • 16/1 TB – $735

Case colors: silver, blue and black.

In fact, this is not just “another gaming smartphone”, but Xiaomi’s attempt to rethink the very approach to mobile performance – with an emphasis on stability, and not just on peak performance.
