Xiaomi MIX Fold 5: proprietary Xring O3 chip and flexible display in a new folding flagship

The Xiaomi company is preparing for the release of a new generation of smart smartphones, which will continue the development of the MIX Fold line. The device with the internal index Q18 belongs to the category of flexible models and, according to preliminary data, may appear on the market as Xiaomi MIX Fold 5, although an alternative designation of Xiaomi 17 Fold is being considered as part of the updated naming scheme.

Development of complex form factor and change of approach to the line

Complex devices are gradually being established in Xiaomi’s strategy as a separate direction, rather than an experimental segment. The Q18 index corresponds to the internal marking system, where similar designations are used for devices with flexible screens, which allows you to attribute the novelty to the next generation of the fold line.

At the same time, the possible name change reflects a broader trend within the brand — the desire to combine different categories of devices under a single logical line. As a result, sophisticated smartphones are increasingly seen not as a separate branch, but part of the main flagship ecosystem.

Transition to proprietary Xring O3 hardware platform

The key feature of the future device will be the use of the Xring O3 single crystal system developed by Xiaomi. The chip is manufactured at the TSMC facilities using a 3-nm technological process, which corresponds to the modern level of mobile solutions of the upper segment.

The processor architecture includes ten computing cores distributed over several clusters to optimize the load, and the graphics part is built on a 16-core Immortalis-G925 accelerator. Such a configuration is oriented to work with demanding tasks, including complex graphics, multitasking and scenarios related to flexible displays.

Developing its own chip is part of Xiaomi’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on third-party suppliers, including Qualcomm. At the same time, it allows deeper integration of the hardware platform with the proprietary HyperOS shell, increasing the consistency of system operation and potentially improving energy efficiency.

Positioning, cost and launch dates

It is expected that the device will occupy the upper segment of complex smartphones, and its starting price in the Chinese market will be about 1,400 dollars. In this category, not only the performance and the screen are key, but also the durability of the structure, including the folding mechanism and the resistance of the flexible panel to loads.

The release of the model is expected in August 2026. Before the official launch, Xiaomi traditionally reveals additional details as the presentation approaches. In general, the new device reflects the brand’s course to strengthen its own technological base and gradual transition to a more independent hardware and software ecosystem.
