The Holy Grail of gaming: Super Mario Bros. sold at auction for a record $3 million
16.06.26
Retro gaming has officially set an incredible new price point. An extremely rare copy of the cult video game Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo console was successfully sold at the famous Heritage Auctions for a record $3 million. The historic deal marked the highest-ever collectibles result, reinforcing the retro classic’s position as a valuable financial asset.
Why the lot is worth millions
The object of the auction was the legendary Super Mario Bros. game, which is in phenomenal physical condition. Independent experts have given this sealed cartridge a PSA 9.6 A++ safety rating. The auctions, which took place from June 12, ended with an absolute record for the entire gaming industry, displacing the previous leader.
To give you an idea of the scale, the previous record was held by another sealed edition of this game, which was sold in 2021 for $2 million. So the new deal raises the price bar by a million dollars. In addition, the final amount almost doubled the value of a sealed Super Mario 64 cartridge that sold for a large amount in the same record-breaking 2021.
The incredible story of the find
The sold copy is considered to be the earliest version of Super Mario Bros., the authenticity of which has been officially confirmed by experts. This copy is from the second production run released by Nintendo in early 1986. Its main external characteristic is a unique glossy sticker-seal. The physical age of the game exceeds 40 years, but the packaging is perfectly preserved, without losing its originality.
Of special interest is the background of the rarity. The auction house’s Director of Video Game Consignment Evan Masingill shared the details: The rare game was discovered just months ago inside a brand new NES Control Deck console bundle that had never been opened. The set lay unpacked for almost forty years, which guaranteed ideal storage conditions for the contents and led to a record sale price.
The real “Holy Grail” of collectors
Heritage organizers call this specimen a real “holy grail” for investors. This status is well-deserved, as only three sealed copies of the original game from this rare 1986 glossy are known to exist today. The two remaining copies are inferior to the sold sample in security grade: one is rated VGA 80 and the other is rated Wata 9.4 A++. The sold PSA 9.6 A + + copy was the first to be offered at a public auction.
In addition to the precious cartridge, the new owner also received the original NES Control Deck console in its original sealed packaging. Although the console itself is not valued at such sums, this tandem preserves the impeccable value of the history of classic gaming.
Interesting trends
This financial explosion in the market has once again confirmed that classic entertainment attracts ever greater amounts of capital. Previously, similar large numbers were demonstrated in other areas as well:
- Last fall, a physical disc of the most popular Fortnite game was sold to collectors for $42,500.
- Earlier this year, a famous blogger bought an exclusive Pokémon Pikachu Illustrator trading card for an unheard of $16.5 million.
