The Boston Dynamics robot performed tricks beyond human capabilities

Boston Dynamics has released a new video showcasing the impressive physical capabilities of its Atlas humanoid robot. In the video, the robot performs a series of complex gymnastic exercises, which confirms the readiness of the technology to transition from laboratory research to commercial use on an industrial scale.

New features of Atlas

The upgraded humanoid Atlas is no longer limited to walking. The new footage shows the robot confidently doing a handstand, after which it smoothly transitions into the L-Sit (corner) exercise, keeping the weight of its entire body on its hands. In the past, developers have demonstrated his ability to perform backflips, but the current balance and static strength figures take the technology to a new level. This demonstration emphasizes not only the power, but also the jewel-like precision of the movement control.

Technical specifications

According to parent company Hyundai, the Atlas is now a production device with features adapted for heavy duty use. The main parameters include:

  • Load capacity: the ability to lift loads weighing up to 50 kg.
  • Manipulators: the robot is equipped with human-sized hands with tactile sensors to interact with objects.
  • Mobility: All of the robot’s joints are fully rotatable, allowing for maneuverability beyond the capabilities of the human body.
  • Temperature mode: Atlas works stably in the range from -20 °C to 48 °C.

The current version of the Atlas differs from early prototypes by abandoning hydraulic systems in favor of fully electric drives. This made it possible to make the design more compact and flexible. Unlike research models focused on demonstrating dexterity, the production Atlas focuses on endurance and performing useful tasks in a human-centric environment.

Release date and availability

The version presented in the video is a serial model, which indicates the rapid start of full commercial operation. In May 2026, it became known that production was approaching industrial scale. The primary sites for the use of robots will be automobile factories of the Hyundai company and its subsidiaries.

The cost of an industrial robot

At this time, Boston Dynamics and Hyundai have not officially announced a fixed price per unit of the Atlas. The initial supply is likely to be carried out under long-term contracts for maintenance and integration into the production processes of the largest industrial players.

Integration of Humanoids

One of the key factors in the success of Atlas was the interest from the automotive industry. So, the Kia company has already announced plans to integrate humanoids on its assembly lines. In addition to Kia, the use of robots of this type is considered by Renault, Xiaomi, as well as the aerospace corporation Airbus to automate complex production tasks.
