Steam Controller 2: Valve returns to controller experimentation

Valve has started selling the second generation of its signature gamepad – Steam Controller 2. For a company that rarely releases new hardware, this launch looks like a notable event. The device continues the line of non-standard controllers, in which the bet is not so much on the usual solutions, but on alternative ways of interacting with games and the system.

Abandoning the classics in favor of accuracy

The key difference between Steam Controller 2 is the control architecture. Instead of the traditional emphasis on analog sticks, two square trackpads with a diagonal of 34.5 mm play a significant role here. They are equipped with tactile feedback and support pressure settings, which allows you to adapt control to different types of games.

This approach is primarily focused on projects where high input accuracy is required. Unlike standard gamepads, where cursor control is implemented as a compromise, trackpads provide control closer to a mouse. This is especially relevant for strategies, simulators and other genres where the detail of actions is important.

The controller also received a six-axis gyroscope, which expands control capabilities due to movement tracking. Instead of classic joints, TMR solutions with increased wear resistance are used. The design is complemented by four rear buttons designed for complex game configurations, as well as a system of four vibromotors for feedback transmission.

Sensors and customization

Capacitive grip sensors became a separate feature of the device. They allow you to capture the position of the user’s hands and potentially use this data for additional functions. Such an element makes the controller more sensitive to the player’s actions and opens up possibilities for more complex control schemes.

Autonomy and connection stability

Steam Controller 2 is designed for long-term use without recharging. The built-in battery provides more than 35 hours of operation, which meets the requirements of long gaming sessions.

Wireless connection is via the proprietary Steam Controller Puck adapter, which also doubles as a magnetic charging base. At the same time, the input delay is declared at the level of about 8 milliseconds, which allows you to use the controller even in dynamic games without noticeable problems with response.

Versatility and application scenarios

The controller is integrated into the Steam ecosystem and is compatible with devices where this service is available. This includes PCs, laptops and portable gaming systems. Due to its design, it goes beyond the usual gamepad and can be used as an interface management tool, for example, when working with a computer at a distance.

Practice shows that the device is particularly suitable for genres that require precise positioning, as well as for users looking for an alternative to a keyboard and mouse combination in conditions of limited space.

Price and availability

Steam Controller 2 costs $99 in the US and €99 in Europe. At the moment, official sales in Ukraine have not been announced. Despite the announcement of the preparation of a large batch of devices, it is possible that the controller may temporarily become scarce during high demand.
