Samsung increases prices for smartphone repairs: causes and consequences

Samsung has announced an increase in the cost of servicing its mobile devices. Due to the global rise in component prices, equipment repairs in South Korea have become noticeably more expensive, and this trend may affect other regions.

Why have prices for repairing Samsung smartphones increased

The rising cost of spare parts is forcing Samsung to adjust not only the price of new devices, but also the cost of servicing them. According to The Chosun, in South Korea, the cost of materials for repairing smartphones has increased by an average of 5%. This is due to volatile market conditions: the prices of raw materials such as copper and gold have increased significantly, and resource shortages have caused the cost of some materials to jump by 60% in the first half of the year.

Price change details

According to official data, about 80% of the cost of repairing a smartphone comes from the cost of replacement components. The rest consists of specialist salaries and service fees, which remain unchanged for now. The company noted: “Material costs have increased, leading to inevitable price increases, but labor costs remain the same.”

Samsung Service Center

Average increase in repair cost

Service type Increase in cost
Smartphone repair (on average) for 11,000 Korean won ($7.37)
Materials for household appliances On average by 9%

Will this affect other brands?

The situation affects not only smartphones: the cost of materials for restoring Samsung household appliances has increased by an average of 9%. At the same time, LG Electronics is currently maintaining the same prices for the repair of its household appliances, but it is worth remembering that LG has officially left the smartphone market. Experts warn that despite the local nature of the reports in South Korea, similar economic factors are being observed around the world.

Should users worry

Many owners attribute the price increase to the rise in memory (RAM) prices due to the boom in AI technology. However, during service maintenance, RAM and data storage components are extremely rarely subject to component repair – most often, if a malfunction occurs, the entire motherboard is replaced. Thus, even a small increase in price, amounting to about 470 UAH ($7.37) for one average order, in total is a significant indicator of changes in the cost of owning modern gadgets. It is not difficult to assume that eventually this rise in price will come to other local markets.
