S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope – the conflict of factions reaches a new level

Studio GSC Game World presented the second trailer for the story expansion Cost of Hope for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The expansion is called The Price of Hope and is billed as the first major DLC for the game, continuing the development of the main story.

A parallel storyline within the main game

Cost of Hope continues the Skiff line, but the add-on events aren’t pushed into a separate mode and aren’t menu-triggered. The new story branch is integrated into the passage and is activated directly during the game via a signal on the PDA.

So, the story develops in parallel with the main plot, gradually affecting the perception of what is in the Zone.

The conflict of “Duty” and “Will” in the center of the story

The key element of the addition is the confrontation between two well-known groups – “Duty” and “Will”.  Their ideological conflict persists: one side insists on the destruction of the Zone as an anomaly that poses a threat, the other sees it as an object of study and potential development.

As events develop, the fragile balance between the factions begins to collapse, and the tension turns into an open phase of confrontation.

Scythus finds himself involved in this process and is faced with the need to choose a side, which affects the further development of the story.

Characters, solutions and new areas

The add-on brings back familiar characters from the series, including Zulu, associated with “Debt,” and Mawka, who represents “The Will.” Their lines cross in the background of a new round of the conflict, and individual episodes demonstrate the forced cooperation between the opposing sides.

The developers claim a non-linear narrative structure. The player’s decisions shape the development of events, influencing the destinies of the characters and individual plot directions. The total amount of content is estimated at dozens of hours of gameplay.

The trailer also reveals new locations, including areas around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Zalisny Forest and Lymansk, expanding the geography of the Zone.

Release date

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope will be released in the summer of 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming and PlayStation 5. Simultaneously with the release of the add-on, a major update to version 2.0 is expected, moving to the newer version of Unreal Engine 5.
