Metro 2039 will be released in December 2026 – more darker, bit like Wolfenstein, and with Red Square exploded

Studio 4A Games, together with publisher Deep Silver, have unveiled a new installment in the series – Metro 2039. The project continues the franchise’s post-apocalyptic arc and moves the events to the year 2039.
Announcement and setting
The action takes place in devastated Moscow, a quarter century after a nuclear war. Survivors continue to fight for resources and influence in the subway, where the metro remains the only habitable space.
The developers describe the game as a journey into the “dark heart of post-apocalyptic Moscow.” The plot centers on a new political entity in the metro: the radical regime of the Novoreich, led by a leader named Hunter.

Plot and Characters
According to the creators, the Novoreich builds its power on propaganda and fear, promoting ideas of strict control and militarism. The regime is preparing the population for a new war for the surface against an unknown enemy.
The protagonist will be a new character, codenamed the Stranger. Unlike previous installments, the story focuses on his personal experiences and psychological state. He experiences constant hallucinations and nightmares, which affect his perception of events.
According to the plot, the Stranger returns to Moscow, which he previously left, and undergoes a series of trials in destroyed tunnels and metro stations.

Release platforms
The announcement took place during a Microsoft presentation. The developers also revealed the project’s first trailer, which outlined the overall tone and direction of the story.
Metro 2039 is scheduled for release in December 2026. It is scheduled for PC and current-generation consoles—the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Versions for other platforms have not been announced at the time of the announcement.
Gameplay details have not yet been revealed. The trailer’s description emphasizes that players will explore the tunnels of a ruined city, where survivors cling to the last vestiges of life and the future remains uncertain.
