Google Play will warn you about apps that drain your smartphone’s battery

google play app batery over use

Google has begun rolling out a new warning system in Google Play. It informs users about Android apps that may consume more battery than usual, according to 9to5Google.

High battery usage warnings

The new warning is designed to inform users of the app’s potential impact on device battery life. The warning appears directly on the app page, before installing or updating it.

Cause: Extensive use of wake lock

The company explains that the change is related to monitoring the use of the Wake Lock mechanism. This mechanism allows an app to keep the processor active even when the smartphone’s screen is off.

If an app consistently exceeds the set threshold for partial wake locks based on key Android metrics, a warning may appear on its Google Play page. Furthermore, such apps may no longer appear in the store’s recommendations.

Exceptions for certain types of apps

Google notes that there are exceptions to this rule. These apply to apps whose increased power consumption is due to features directly used by the user.

Such cases include, for example:

  • music playback;
  • geolocation;
  • user-initiated data transfer.

Separate documentation has been published for developers explaining the conditions under which such exceptions are possible.

The rollout will be gradual

According to the company, combating excessive battery drain remains a priority for the Android platform. The new system should help developers optimize app performance and reduce battery drain on devices.

The warnings and associated technical limitations will be rolled out gradually over several weeks. The changes will primarily affect apps that have the greatest impact on smartphone battery life.
