Black Myth: Wukong sold more than 30 million copies in two years

The Chinese video game market has long been overshadowed by global industry leaders, but the situation has changed significantly in recent years. A vivid example of this shift was the action-RPG Black Myth: Wukong from the Game Science studio, which in a relatively short time managed to establish itself among the largest global releases.

The game, which was heavily discussed even before its release, quickly became one of the key projects of the industry after its release in 2024. Already in the first days after its launch, it set a Steam platform record among single-player games, reaching a peak online of more than 2.2 million users and bypassing such projects as Counter-Strike 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Palworld.

Sales growth and global demand

Developers Game Science initially reported 24 million copies sold, but later new data released by the Communist Youth League of China increased this figure to 30 million. A significant part of the sales fell on foreign markets, which emphasizes the international interest in the project and its setting based on Chinese mythology.

Steam remains the most popular platform for purchase, while the PlayStation 5 version is in second place. Such a schedule demonstrates a steady interest in the PC segment, even for big-budget releases.

Comparison with world hits

The sales dynamics of Black Myth: Wukong stands out against the background of other big projects of recent years. It took Elden Ring about three years to reach similar figures, and Cyberpunk 2077 about five years, including a long post-release recovery period. In this context, the success of Chinese action seems particularly rapid and highlights the changing balance in the global gaming industry.
