ASUS has unveiled the ROG Equalizer 12V-2×6, a new solution aimed at mitigating overheating risks in modern 16-pin graphics card power connectors.
An industry-wide issue still without a universal fix
In recent months, users have increasingly reported cases of overheating and even damage to power connectors on next-generation GPUs, including NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series from NVIDIA. These incidents have raised concerns among consumers and become a widely discussed topic in the hardware community.
Since no unified industry standard solution exists yet, manufacturers have started developing their own alternatives — including cables, adapters, and power delivery systems designed to reduce stress on connectors.
Different engineering approaches
Some companies, such as ASRock, have focused on integrating temperature sensors to actively monitor connector conditions.
ASUS, however, has taken a different approach. With the ROG Equalizer cable, the emphasis is not on monitoring, but on preventing overheating by ensuring a more even distribution of electrical load across all connector pins.
Enhanced power handling and load balancing

The cable is effectively an improved version of the 12V-2×6 standard, offering increased electrical capacity. It supports current loads of up to 17 A, compared to around 9.2 A in typical implementations.
Overheating in such connectors is often caused by uneven current distribution: when some pins are underutilized, the remaining ones carry excessive load, leading to localized heat buildup.
ASUS claims its design helps balance the load across all contacts, reducing the risk of such hotspots.
Temperature performance and design concept
According to ASUS, the ROG Equalizer can maintain temperatures around 73.4°C even in scenarios where four central wires are not actively carrying current.
Under normal conditions, such imbalance could result in temperatures rising up to 146°C. While the company does not disclose the exact engineering mechanism, it is likely based on impedance balancing and optimized current distribution within the cable structure.
Package contents and compatibility

The ROG Equalizer 12V-2×6 will be bundled with ASUS’s new ROG Thor III and ROG Strix Platinum power supply units released this year. It is also expected to be compatible with other systems supporting the same power standard.
Overall, ASUS is positioning this as an intermediate engineering solution aimed at reducing risks until a more fundamental redesign of GPU power delivery systems emerges.
