XREAL is betting on lightweight AR glasses instead of bulky VR headsets

XREAL has made an important announcement: the new augmented reality glasses Project Aura, designed on the basis of the revolutionary Android XR operating system from Google, will enter the global market for retail sale by the end of 2026. The manufacturer also officially launched an early testing and technology partnership program aimed at active creation of specialized software by third-party developers.

The first working concept of Project Aura augmented reality glasses was first shown to the public in 2025 as one of the advanced devices designed specifically for the Android XR software platform. Unlike the bulky, insulating helmets and headsets of traditional mixed (MR) and virtual (VR) reality, the Aura glasses use innovative see-through displays. They provide a natural view of the space around the user and overlay interfaces directly on real physical objects, eliminating the delay of video streams from built-in cameras.

Characteristics and technical features

The manufacturer keeps the technical characteristics of Project Aura a secret at this stage – the full specification sheet will be officially presented at the next profile presentations. The main confirmed engineering emphasis remains ultra-thin optical panels and hardware compactness, close to ordinary classic glasses. The ability of the gadget to communicate with external devices was separately confirmed: yes, the demonstration of the device’s capabilities revealed support for its trouble-free broadcast from PCs and laptops using the DisplayPort interface connector. Such a tandem forms a flexible three-dimensional space from huge displays in front of the user.

Key differences from mixed VR headsets

In the segment of augmented reality, the new glasses from XREAL are very different from traditional VR/MR headsets like Apple Vision Pro in their physical essence. The optical scheme of the glasses is completely transparent – the eyes look directly through the glass, eliminating pixel segregation and time lag of cameras. Such a strong system synergy is caused precisely by optimization for the Android XR OS from Google. Thus, the project fits into the line of software innovations of the emerging corporation, along with the expected smart glasses from the alliance of Samsung and Google, which were demonstrated in detail as part of the Google I/O 2026 technology conference.

During special live demo sessions as part of I/O 2026, visitors were able to personally experience the working interface of Project Aura. Smart glasses are perfect for adaptive work with special interactive Google Maps, the client of the YouTube video platform with direct support for immersive viewing angles of 180 and 360, as well as with other intelligent auxiliary tools due to the tight internal integration of Gemini AI.

Release date and price

Although the manufacturer did not name a clear calendar day of release, the developer guaranteed the global launch of sales of its long-awaited AR headset before the end of 2026.

Project Aura’s suggested retail prices for commercial retail have not been officially announced at this time. The brand promised to provide detailed financial information about the device closer to the global premiere.
