Ukraine enter the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
01.04.24
Ukraine has joined the WIPO ALERT (World Intellectual Property Organization) international platform. Now our country, together with other 14 states, will form a list of websites that violate intellectual property rights.
Signatories of the initiative will upload to the databases lists with detailed information about websites (as well as mobile applications) that are reasonably suspected of infringing intellectual property rights. The platform primarily targets advertising agencies and businesses to prevent ads from appearing on these sites.
Maintaining a national list is provided for by Article 8 of the Law of Ukraine “On Advertising”. That is, for placing advertisements on websites that will be included in this list, you can be held administratively liable.
On March 21, 2024, the Ministry of Economy adopted the relevant law on approval of the procedure for forming and maintaining a national list of websites suspected of non-compliance with intellectual property rights.
The first sites from Ukraine entered this database in 2021. Then they contributed four streaming resources: rezka.ag, ex-fs.net, seasonvar.ru, kinogo.zone.
Note that Ukraine is among the top 5 countries that consume the most pirated content. In terms of consumption of pirated content, even India is the leader, accounting for 11% of visits to pirated resources. The third place was taken by Russia with an indicator of 6%. Great Britain, Canada, Ukraine and Turkey are next with an indicator of 3%.
According to the Motion Picture Association, it was calculated that, excluding the costs of creating content, the profitability of such services is close to 90%. At the same time, the damage to the US economy from streaming piracy is estimated at $30 billion in lost revenue annually and about 250,000 jobs. Annual losses to the global economy reach $71 billion.
