Toyota joins cellcentric project with Daimler and Volvo to advance hydrogen technology

Toyota has announced its entry into the joint venture cellcentric, established by Daimler Truck and Volvo Group in 2020. The partnership aims to accelerate the development and production of hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

Combining expertise

The companies plan to coordinate efforts in both development and manufacturing. According to Toyota President and CEO Koji Sato, the collaboration will bring together decades of experience and help create advanced solutions for heavy commercial vehicles.

Toyota contributes over 30 years of experience in fuel cell development, while its partners hold strong positions in the commercial vehicle segment.

Against the trend

This move stands out amid a broader decline in interest toward hydrogen initiatives in the automotive industry. Previously, Stellantis discontinued its fuel cell program, while General Motors also stepped away from similar projects.

Toyota’s strategic shift

Back in 2025, Toyota reassessed its hydrogen strategy, shifting focus toward industrial applications rather than the mass consumer market.
