Sony has limited the purchase of storage devices for the PS5 due to high demand.

Sony has decided to limit the number of external drives available for purchase in one hand. You can now order no more than one accessory for the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro consoles at a time in the PlayStation Direct store. The publication Videocardz previously reported on similar measures.

Why Sony limits the sale of disk drives

According to the representatives of the company, such a radical step is connected with the hyped demand for the accessory. At the moment, the disk drive, the price of which is 3,250 hryvnias ($79), remains the key solution for users who want to keep access to libraries on physical media.

Device capabilities

The removable disk drive significantly expands the functionality of the digital versions of the PlayStation 5. It allows users to:

• Run physical copies of games developed for PS5 and PS4.
• Play videos in Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and DVD formats.

Limitations of physical media in the future

These limitations have become especially relevant in light of Sony’s recent announcements about the future of physical media. The company confirmed that from January 2028, new video games for the PlayStation ecosystem will cease to be released on discs.

The situation is complicated by the fact that Sony is already actively repurposing its production facilities, which were previously involved in the creation of discs, which only increases the fears of gamers about the gradual transition to digital.
