OpenAI enters the advertising market: a top manager from Meta joins the company

OpenAI is strengthening its monetization strategy and expanding into the advertising market by bringing in a former Meta executive. The move involves Dave Dugan, who previously oversaw relationships with global clients and agencies within the structure of Mark Zuckerberg’s company.

New head of advertising direction

Dugan has taken on the role of Vice President of Global Advertising at OpenAI. In his new position, he will be responsible for developing advertising sales and building relationships with major brands and agencies. He is expected to report to the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap.

The appointment of a specialist with experience at Meta, where advertising represents a core source of revenue, signals OpenAI’s intention to systematically develop its own advertising business.

Focus on new revenue streams

Dugan’s hiring comes amid rising costs associated with infrastructure development and the launch of large-scale projects, including the construction of data centers. In this context, OpenAI is exploring additional sources of funding.

The company has already begun experimenting with advertising formats in ChatGPT. This move has sparked discussion in the market and drawn criticism from competitors, including Anthropic.

From skepticism to necessity

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously expressed caution about integrating advertising into AI-driven products. He described such a step as a last-resort option for the company’s business model.

However, growing demand for computing resources and increasing development costs appear to have pushed the company to reconsider its stance.

Concerns about user trust

One of the key risks highlighted by Altman is the potential erosion of user trust. There are concerns that users may question the neutrality of chatbot responses if advertising becomes part of the product.

When introducing advertising elements in ChatGPT, the company emphasized that commercial content does not influence the AI’s responses. OpenAI also stated that user data is not sold to advertisers.

Strengthening the team with Meta talent

Dugan is not the only executive with a background at Meta to join OpenAI. The company also employs Fidji Simo, who spent around a decade at Meta. She currently serves as CEO of Applications within the company’s product and business team.
