Microsoft has changed plans for implementing Copilot features in Windows 11

Microsoft Copilot Plus PC

Microsoft has adjusted plans for the development of Copilot functions in Windows 11. Some of the features that were previously demonstrated together with the Copilot+ PC concept in 2024 will not be implemented in their original form or will be canceled altogether. This concerns the implementation of artificial intelligence tools in basic user interface elements, such as the notification system, system settings and File Explorer. This is reported by sources of Windows Central.

Demonstrations did not translate into practical implementation

At presentations in 2024, company representative Yusuf Mehdi showed options for Copilot operation, in which it became part of the Windows system environment and functioned directly within standard components. At that time, it was assumed that the first elements of such interaction would appear during the same year. However, none of these functions appeared even in early test versions of the system.

According to sources, the strategy review took place shortly after the launch of the Windows Recall function was postponed. Amid the challenges associated with this development, the company has temporarily suspended development of a number of other AI-based initiatives within the operating system.

AI integration continues, but in a modified format

Microsoft and AI

Later, Microsoft returned to the idea of introducing artificial intelligence elements in Windows 11, but without the previous emphasis on the Copilot brand. In the updated versions of the system, semantic search appeared in the settings, which helps the user find the necessary parameters faster. In the “File Explorer” they introduced the AI Actions menu, through which tasks are redirected to third-party applications.

The initial concept assumed that actions could be performed directly within the “Explorer” without switching to other programs. In the current implementation, this approach has been changed: operations are performed through separate services and applications.

Unrealized functions remain in question

Some of the capabilities shown earlier have not been developed. In particular, the Copilot Suggestions function, which was supposed to appear in the notification system, is still missing in Windows 11. It was conceived as a tool for quick interaction with notifications, allowing you to perform actions, such as opening files or responding to messages directly from pop-up windows.

According to sources, the probability of this feature appearing in its original form is low. At the same time, the idea itself may be refined and implemented later, but in a different format.

Updating terminology and responding to user feedback

As part of the change in approach, Microsoft also renamed Windows Copilot Runtime to Windows AI APIs. Currently, the Copilot brand is mostly associated with products in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, rather than with an integrated assistant within the operating system.

Sources note that the company seeks to reduce the number of AI tools in the system and implement them more selectively. This approach is due to user feedback that indicated that the system was overloaded with new functions.

At the same time, Microsoft does not refuse to further develop the direction of artificial intelligence. New solutions will be implemented pointwise, taking into account their practical benefit, as well as with the ability to disable them by the user.
