Mercedes-AMG GT EV: luxury electric sedan with 1153 hp and ultra-fast charging

The German premium brand Mercedes-Benz presented the advanced electric supersedan Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The car is built on the design experience of the experimental Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept, which recently set outstanding endurance records for electric vehicles at the Autodrome in Italy.

The novelty is a full-fledged high-tech four-door super coupe that combines the luxury of the executive class with the sporty character of AMG. Based on the architecture of sports prototypes, the company managed to design a low sports silhouette that preserved the comfortable layout of the passenger cabin. The model marks the final elimination of the vector of powerful AMG sedans to the ecological electric side without any loss in racing dynamics.

Technical characteristics and dynamics of the sports car

The basis of the electric car’s power supply was a unique power plant consisting of three new electric motors of the Axial Flux type. The production of aggregates was taken over by the subsidiary high-tech company YASA. The peculiarity of motors with an axial magnetic flux is their ultra-thin disk design. Such power units are noticeably more compact and lighter than any conventional synchronous electric motors, providing a record power-to-weight ratio. According to the Mercedes-Benz engineers, the brand is the first manufacturer to integrate such a progressive engine solution into a production road car.

Mercedes-AMG

The peak performance of the installation of the flagship GT 63 modification reaches a stunning 1153 hp. and an incredible torque of the order of 2000 N·m. Such phenomenal indicators are transformed into acceleration: from zero to the first 100 km/h, a heavy electric sedan is able to accelerate in about 2 seconds. These values firmly put the practical four-door in the same league as the most exclusive hypercars on the planet.

Revolutionary battery system and ultra-fast charging

The full potential of the power plant is provided by a new lithium-ion traction battery. German engineers used very densely packed ultra-thin cylindrical elements with increased heat exchange efficiency. The revolutionary direct cooling mechanism prevents overheating: engineers filled the module with a special non-conductive synthetic oil that washes absolutely every single cell.

The integrated cooling system produces an incredible heat output of 20 kW, which is almost four times higher than the similar heat exchange rate of the flagship Mercedes-Benz EQS. This design modification preserves the high-speed capabilities of the car during races on the track over long distances without activating the emergency mode of overheating of the electric drive.

The architectural basis of the model was a productive high-voltage 800-volt electric platform. The maximum peak energy replenishment power from the supported DC stations is a phenomenal 600 kW. When charging in an ideal speed cycle, the AMG GT’s battery capacity level increases from an initial 10% to a final 80% in just under 11 minutes. Compatibility with a wide model range of external connectors of the CCS2 standard and the common NACS solution is supported.

Specific features and sound concept

An important goal of the team during the development was to retain the internal combustion engine heritage as much as possible and the real emotions of driving behind the wheel of the all-electric representative of the AMG line. To compensate for the silent operation of the electric drive, the coupe was equipped with a generator of pseudo-dynamic sounds — an acoustic system with a built-in base of 1,600 different digital sound schemes.

The computer smoothly and adaptively simulates the sound of a powerful gasoline V8 power plant under deep load, the noise of direct-flow exhaust systems and the cut-off of the virtual algorithm of the variable gear ratio of the transmission. Acoustic zoning is thought out as precisely as possible – separate sets of interactive special effects are triggered both when the car doors are opened normally, and directly when the cable is connected in the supercharger parking lot.

Ultra-modern salon

The salon has been completely transferred to the new rails of digitalization. Behind the front panoramic glass stretches a whole multimedia array consisting of three interactive digital touch panels and fully integrated MB.OS digital firmware systems, which is updated. The work of all the most complex technical circuits of the super coupe is controlled by the independent digital heart of the on-board AMG Race Engineer Core processor. Its computing resources allow you to process all the current settings of electronically controlled nodes – starting with the stiffness of the precision racing adaptive air suspension and ending with the oil supply algorithms for washing the batteries in turns.

What versions will be available and when will production begin?

For fans of maximum prestige, traditions of the Mercedes-AMG line and supporters of the transition to a modern technological electric drive, the new car definitely promises to become a market favorite.

The release of the luxury electric sedan is planned for the period of change of model years in the second half of the current decade. The start of global orders for the basic GT 55 should be rolled out before the end of 2026. The AMG GT 63 car with the maximum dynamic power is scheduled for release at the beginning of 2027.
