The price of PlayStation 6 could reach $1000: why delaying the release will only make the situation worse

Expectations regarding the cost of Sony’s upcoming console have undergone major changes. Insider Kepler_L2, based on the current market situation and the rapid rise in component prices, has revised its forecast for the cost of assembly (BOM) for the PlayStation 6. If earlier experts were guided by a figure of $699, now the estimated cost of components has increased to $1,000.

Why the predicted price of PS6 has risen to $1,000

Rising costs for components became the main driver for the revision of forecasts. Analysts note a sharp rise in the cost of memory and data storage systems. According to Micron’s CEO, high memory prices will continue for at least the next 5 years. With that in mind, the projected bill of materials (BOM) for the PlayStation 6 has risen from $760 to nearly $1,000, even before Sony’s trade markups.

Updated estimate of the cost of PS6 components

Characteristics and hardware of PlayStation 6

Despite the high cost, the technical equipment of the console promises to be impressive. According to Kepler_L2, the device will receive:

  • 30 GB GDDR7 RAM
  • 1 TB SSD drive
  • Performance SoC Orion, the development of which is at an advanced stage

These parameters highlight the transition to the next generation architecture, but it is the cost of these advanced chips that makes the device more expensive for the end consumer.

Impact of release delay on cost

There is some speculation that Sony should delay the release of the PS6, scheduled for 2027. However, the insider claims the opposite: the delay will not only not solve the price problem, but may even worsen it. Due to semiconductor and component price inflation, waiting does not guarantee lower costs for the company. Instead of postponing, Sony could start purchasing components ahead of time to balance out the project’s economics.

Should we expect alternative strategies

Given the current problems, the availability of next-generation consoles remains in question. Competitors are also experiencing difficulties – prices for the Xbox Series X have been adjusted upward. Under these circumstances, Sony may consider temporarily extending the PS5’s lifecycle to wait for market prices to stabilize, although this may limit the ability of developers of AAA projects that are already close to the performance limits of the current hardware.
