The lack of memory is not scary: Sony has ensured the production of PlayStation 5 for the coming year
01.08.26
The increase in demand for memory for artificial intelligence systems will not affect the release of PlayStation 5. Sony said that it has reserved the necessary components in advance, ensuring stable production of the consoles until at least the end of the 2026 fiscal year, which ends in April 2027.
Stable supply amid the AI boom
Recent months in the electronics market have been characterized by rising prices and a shortage of memory modules, caused by explosive demand from the artificial intelligence sector. In its latest quarterly report, Sony emphasized that measures taken to order components will avoid production disruptions in the coming year.
Sales statistics and profit figures
In the first quarter of the current financial year, the company sold 1.6 million PlayStation 5 devices, which is less than last year’s result for the same period (2.5 million). Experts associate such dynamics with the recent increase in the cost of the console. However, the total number of PS5s sold since launch in 2020 has reached 95.3 million units.
The financial paradox is interesting: despite the fall in sales of “iron”, Sony’s total profit grew by 37%, reaching 54.1 billion yen (about $337 million / €312.27 million (14,069 UAH)). This growth is due to refunds for US duties and favorable fluctuations in exchange rates.
Game activity of users
Game sales figures remained stable and comparable to the results of the previous year. At the same time, positive dynamics in the user base are noticeable: the number of monthly active PlayStation users increased by 2 million and reached 125 million people.
Preformed memory reserves allow Sony to confidently plan the release of the PlayStation 5 in conditions of an unstable component market. Now the company’s attention will be focused on supporting the demand, which may increase significantly with the release of major game releases.
