The end of the flip phone era: Samsung may abandon the Galaxy Z Flip series after the release of the eighth generation

Foldable clamshell smartphones may undergo major changes in their development. According to insiders with a good reputation in Samsung leaks, namely Ice Universe, the company is considering the possibility of completely discontinuing the Galaxy Z Flip line. There is a high probability that the Galaxy Z Flip8 will be the last representative of this series.

Similar rumors have arisen several times in the past, but they came from dubious sources. Now analysts who can be trusted have commented on the situation, which makes us take the information much more seriously, given the current dynamics of the folding device market.

Why Samsung is planning to abandon the Galaxy Z Flip series

The main catalyst for change is the economic situation in the industry. The rising cost of RAM is forcing manufacturers to significantly raise selling prices for their products. An example is the recently announced Motorola Razr 70 and Razr 70 Ultra models, the price of which is significantly higher than their predecessors due to rising costs of components.

The second critical factor is limited competition in Western markets. Most manufacturers – Oppo, Xiaomi, vivo and Honor – have either curtailed sales of flip phones in Europe and the US, or never offered them outside of China at all. Ultimately, the market remained virtually in the hands of two companies: Samsung and Motorola.

What does the future hold for foldable smartphones?

At the moment, it is premature to draw final conclusions. Perhaps we are not talking about complete elimination, but about a long-term pause or reorganization of the Flip series after the release of the eighth generation. The technology segment remains volatile, and the decision may change depending on the market reaction to upcoming innovations.
