Tesla Model Y Surpasses 4 Million Sales Milestone: Global Leadership and Market Challenges

Tesla Model Y Surpasses 4 Million Sales Milestone: Global Leadership and Market Challenges

Total global sales of the Tesla Model Y have officially surpassed the four million unit mark in just three years on the market. According to Elon Musk’s company and research firms, this electric crossover has held the title of the world’s best-selling passenger car for three consecutive years, outpacing all internal combustion engine models, hybrids, and other electric vehicles.

Production Metrics and Global Dominance

Throughout 2025, Tesla demonstrated high efficiency by manufacturing 1,654,667 vehicles and delivering 1,636,129 units. A key role in these achievements is played by the Chinese Gigafactory, which accounts for 52% of total production, amounting to 851,732 units. This highlights the strategic importance of the Shanghai production facilities for the brand’s global expansion.

China Market Dynamics and Competitive Landscape

In the Chinese market, Model Y popularity surged by an impressive 215.84%, despite general industry fluctuations. In February, total deliveries in the country rose by 42.68% year-over-year, reaching 38,206 units, with 25,286 being Model Ys. However, Tesla faces significant pressure: in January 2026, the Xiaomi YU7 crossover outsold the Model Y in China. Annual Model Y figures in the PRC for 2025 fell by 34.44% to 425,337 units, although the model still accounts for 67.98% of all Tesla sales in the country. To strengthen its position, the company is preparing the global launch of a six-seater Model Y L version.
