Microsoft is raising prices on Xbox again: what players need to know

Microsoft Corporation has officially announced a large-scale increase in the cost of Xbox game consoles on the global market. The new pricing policy comes into force on August 1, 2026 and affects most current models in the line.

Why are Xbox consoles becoming more expensive

According to the official statement, devices with 512 GB storage will increase in price by $100, and models with 1 TB of memory will rise in price by $150. In addition, the company announced the discontinuation of sales of the 2 TB version of the console. This decision was dictated by a sharp increase in costs: the cost of memory modules and components for data storage systems has increased by more than 2.5 times, while experts predict a further doubling of the price of components by the fall of 2027.

The situation is complicated by the specifics of the game console market. Microsoft emphasizes that consoles are often sold not at a profit, but at a price lower than the cost of production, so any fluctuation in market prices for components critically affects the financial results of the division.

How Microsoft is trying to soften the blow to users’ wallets

To maintain audience loyalty in the face of rising prices, the company is introducing new tools:

  • Expansion of the “buy now, pay later” program
  • Arranging for interest-free installations when purchasing consoles on Amazon.
  • Developing partnerships with retail chains to sell refurbished and used devices at discounted prices.

Xbox in crisis: reshuffles and changes

The rise in price of consoles occurs against the background of structural changes in the gaming segment of the corporation. Earlier, Craig Duncan left the post of head of Xbox Game Studios, and current Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced staff optimization and large-scale cuts. There are rumors circulating in the market about the possible transformation of Xbox into a completely independent company due to the weak profitability of the current gaming direction.

Is it worth buying an Xbox now

Currently, players have until August to purchase the console at the current price. If you’ve been planning a purchase, Microsoft’s current installation plans could be a good idea. In the current economic realities (approximately in currency equivalent), the cost of equipment is only growing, which makes old stocks from retailers a more profitable investment than buying at a new price.
