Huawei is preparing to release the Huawei MateBook 14 HarmonyOS Edition, positioned as a competitor to MacBook Neo. The device is scheduled to launch on April 20, with several key details already disclosed, offering insight into the direction of the lineup.
Focus on a proprietary software platform and hardware base
One of the defining aspects of the device is the use of HarmonyOS instead of the traditional Windows environment. This reflects Huawei’s broader strategy to transition toward in-house software solutions and reduce reliance on third-party platforms.
The hardware configuration includes up to 24 GB of RAM, a 512 GB storage drive, and the Kirin X90A processor. This setup indicates a focus on workloads requiring sustained performance, including multitasking and content processing.
Display and design adjustments
The laptop is equipped with a 14.2-inch display featuring 2.8K resolution and an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. It is also reported to have slimmer bezels compared to the MacBook Neo, affecting both the visual perception and screen-to-body ratio.
The keyboard features rounded keys, suggesting refinements in user interaction. The overall design remains consistent with the MateBook series’ minimalist approach.
Ports and physical connectivity
The device includes a broader selection of ports than many modern laptops, with HDMI, USB Type-A, USB Type-C, and a 3.5 mm audio jack located on the left side. This contrasts with the ongoing trend of reducing physical interfaces.
Details about the right side of the chassis have not yet been disclosed, leaving the full port configuration unclear.
Gradual shift away from Windows
Previous Huawei laptops were shipped with Windows 11, but the company is increasingly emphasizing its own operating system. It is also noted that Windows versions on earlier models have not received updates since 2024.
