Google introduced Jpegli. New image compression library 35% more efficient than JPEG
07.04.24
Google introduced new open source Jpegli library for image compression. It is 35% more efficient than traditional JPEG codecs, which can save bandwidth and storage space.
Jpegli uses new techniques to reduce noise and improve image quality. The library provides a compatible encoder and decoder that conforms to the original JPEG standard. Jpegli can be encoded with 10 or more bits per component, JPEG has 8 bits.
API/ABI compatibility with libjpeg-turbo and MozJPEG also remains. Therefore, web developers can immediately integrate Jpegli into their existing workflows without sacrificing coding performance or memory usage.
Jpegli uses a number of new techniques to reduce noise and improve image quality. These include adaptive quantization heuristics from the JPEG XL reference implementation, improved quantization matrix selection, accurate calculation of intermediate results, and the ability to use a more advanced color space.
It is stated that when images are compressed or decompressed using Jpegli, the images will appear sharper and have fewer observable artifacts.
