Google announced the Googlebook line: Chromebooks are becoming a thing of the past
13.05.26
The first Chromebooks were introduced on May 11, 2011, and 15 years later, Google is opening a new chapter in the history of its portable computers. As part of the Android Show I/O Edition event, the launch of the Googlebook category was announced – notebooks running Android with a wide range of built-in Gemini Intelligence functions.
Googlebook positioning
Googlebook is positioned as an evolution and a modern alternative to the usual chromebooks. An important detail is that Google, as before, does not plan to manufacture these laptops on its own. To implement the project, the company involved five key OEM partners: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo.
Unlike Chromebooks, which at the beginning of the journey were perceived as budget solutions, Googlebook aims to use higher quality materials. Manufacturers will offer a wide selection of form factors and case sizes.
Technical characteristics and design features

Although the full technical specifications and system requirements are not disclosed yet, Google emphasized the aesthetic and functional side of the novelties. One of the prominent features will be the signature LED panel in the colors of the rainbow. It will perform not only a decorative role, but also serve as an indicator of the functional load of the system.
The operating system of Googlebook is completely based on Android. Despite the fact that the final name of the system has not yet been officially announced, it previously appeared as Aluminum OS. The basis of the entire system of interaction with the laptop will be the Gemini Intelligence environment.
Features of Gemini Intelligence

The central place in the interface is occupied by the Magic Pointer. It is a smart cursor based on Gemini that changes its capabilities depending on the context. The main scenarios of its use include:
- Combining two images (for example, interior elements) into one.
- Circle elements on the screen to create search or information queries in Gemini.
- Help with working with e-mails.
- Comparison of objects directly on the screen.

In addition, the Create My Widget function has been introduced into the system. It allows you to create personalized widgets by simply describing their purpose in natural language. It is noteworthy that this possibility will later become available on smartphones of the Pixel and Samsung series.
Integration with smartphones and working with files

Cast My Apps technology has been implemented for Android smartphone users. According to the principle of operation, it resembles the “mirroring” of programs between iPhone and Mac. You can run apps from your smartphone on your laptop in one click without having to install them. Also, the file manager allows you to seamlessly search, download and exchange data between gadgets.
Release date
The official release date of the first Googlebook models is planned for the fall of 2026.
As for the future of the current Chromebooks, Google has confirmed they will be supported for a claimed 10-year lifespan. However, no announcements have been made about the release of new Chromebook models, which indirectly confirms a complete change in strategy in favor of GoogleBooks.
