Hacker groups linked to China have become the most active source of espionage cyber threats to technology companies over the past year. This is stated in a new report by CrowdStrike, which Reuters refers to.
The purpose of the attacks and the interests of the state
The document emphasizes that such activity reflects China’s strategic priorities related to the development of technology and access to information that has economic and strategic value. It is primarily about intellectual property, developments in the field of high technologies and data related to technological research.
The technology sector as the main target
According to the report, technology companies remain one of the main targets of government agencies for hackers and cybercriminals. In the focus of the attacks are organizations engaged in the development and production of equipment, software, semiconductors, as well as IT services and consulting.
Separately, it is emphasized that increased interest is observed in companies working in the field of artificial intelligence and related technologies.
Research period and role of AI
The analysis covers the period from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026. The report notes that increased investment in artificial intelligence has increased competition for access to technological developments, making this segment one of the most attractive targets for cyberespionage.
CrowdStrike representatives point out that artificial intelligence systems today are seen as one of the most valuable assets in terms of potential attacks.
China’s response and other cyber threats
The report did not identify specific companies affected by the attacks. At the same time, the Chinese side rejects such accusations, declaring its disagreement with cybercriminal activity and rejecting politically motivated accusations in this area.
In addition to China, structures associated with North Korea, which use employment schemes in the IT sphere with the use of front persons, are also named among the significant sources of threats. Hacking groups linked to Russia and Iran continue to attack the technology sector to obtain information or conduct destructive operations.
