Apple Labels iPhone X and 2018 MacBook Pro as Obsolete

The anniversary iPhone X, launched by Apple to mark the 10th anniversary of the series, is officially classified as an obsolete product. Nearly nine years after its market debut, the device has been added to Apple’s relevant list. The same fate has befallen the 15-inch MacBook Pro released in 2018.

Designating a device as “obsolete” means the end of mandatory technical support from the manufacturer. Service centers will no longer be able to source original spare parts for repairs, making hardware servicing impossible.

What the Obsolete Status Means

Typically, the company moves a device into the “obsolete” category seven years after it was last distributed for sale. This is the final stage of a product’s lifecycle for the manufacturer. However, exceptions exist for Mac laptops: they may be eligible for battery replacements at authorized service centers for up to 10 years after they were last sold, provided that necessary parts remain available.

Software Support

It is important to remember that the software lifespan of these devices ended before their hardware lifespan:

• The iPhone X received its final OS update with iOS 16.7.16.
• For the 15-inch MacBook Pro (2018), software support ended with macOS 15.7.7.

Can You Still Use an iPhone X in 2026?

Given the official transition to obsolete status, iPhone X users should account for the lack of current security updates and the unavailability of spare parts in the event of failure.
