An old standard in a new reality: Xiaomi squeezes the most out of USB-A with a 100-watt GaN charger
29.04.26
The transition of the industry to USB-C has long been an obvious trend, but Xiaomi prefers to act less categorically. Instead of completely abandoning USB-A, the company offers a rethinking of it – with an emphasis on power, compactness and practicality. The new 100 W adapter is an attempt to extend the life of the usual format, while bringing it up to modern requirements.
Lossless compactness: betting on GaN
The main device is gallium nitride (GaN) technology, which has already established itself as a standard for advanced charging solutions. Its key advantage is high energy efficiency with less heat generation. This allows you to place powerful components in a compact case without the risk of overheating.
As a result, the adapter turned out to be light and small, which is especially important for users who often move and do not want to carry bulky power supplies with them. At the same time, in terms of power, it is able to compete with full-fledged laptop chargers.
Going beyond the standard: how 100W over USB-A works
The main feature of the device is the use of the USB-A port to transfer power, which significantly exceeds its “classic” capabilities. Xiaomi is selling it on account of its fast charging protocols, practically expanding the limits of the standard.
However, this architecture has a downside. Maximum productivity is achieved mainly when using proprietary devices or compatible solutions. For the rest of the equipment, the adapter remains universal, but does not always reveal its potential at 100%.
Balance of price and functionality

The cost of the device — about $25 — makes it an affordable solution, especially considering the claimed characteristics. But in order to keep this price tag, the manufacturer had to simplify some design details.
For example, the fork does not fold, which slightly reduces the convenience of transportation. However, key elements affecting performance are implemented without compromise. The set includes a cable designed for high current strength, which is important for stable operation at maximum power.
Xiaomi Strategy
This product is a good example of Xiaomi’s strategy: to create devices that work best within their own ecosystem. Although the adapter also supports universal scenarios, its maximum capabilities are revealed precisely in connection with the brand’s equipment.
Transitional stage of the market
The appearance of such decisions shows that the market is in an intermediate phase. USB-C is gradually becoming the dominant standard, but USB-A is still widely used and cannot be ignored.
Xiaomi is betting on adaptation rather than a sudden transition. Instead of forcing users to change their familiar infrastructure, the company offers to improve it — to make it faster, more powerful, and more convenient.
As a result, the new adapter is not just a technical novelty, but a reflection of a wider trend: technologies develop not only by replacing the old one, but also by rethinking it.
