1666: Amsterdam from the creator of Assassin’s Creed is now available for viewing

Assassin's Creed

After a long lull, one of the most famous authors in the video game industry is once again preparing to present a new large-scale franchise. Patrice Désilets, who was at the origin of the first parts of Assassin’s Creed, and also worked on such projects: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, together with the studio Panache Digital Games presented the first game 1666: Amsterdam.

The project marks Désilets’ first major work since Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, and has already attracted fans thanks to its unusual combination of historical setting, mysticism, and atmosphere reminiscent of early Assassin’s Creed games.

A story of Ancient Magic that has survived the centuries

The events of 1666: Amsterdam unfold in several time periods at once. The plot is based on an ancient legend about the Zaindari tribe, which was entrusted with powerful magic. Initially, its purpose was to preserve the balance and transfer knowledge to the next generations.

However, later the keepers of the force came to the conclusion that not everyone is worthy to use such a dangerous gift. This decision starts a chain of events, the consequences of which will stretch for centuries and affect several eras at once.

The prologue trailer shows how an ancient conflict gradually leads to the events taking place in the Netherlands in the 17th century – a period of religious confrontations, witch hunts and social upheaval.

The Witch, the Cat and Amsterdam in 1666

Assassin's Creed

The main character is a girl named Noa, who has a connection with ancient magic. Her constant companion is a cat, which plays a much more important role than it might seem at first glance.

The developers put a special emphasis on the interaction of the heroine with the surrounding world and mystical forces, as well as on the study of the atmospheric Amsterdam of the 17th century, filled with secrets, superstitions and political intrigues.

At the same time, the plot will not be limited to one historical era. Players will have to be periodically transferred to the present, where the characters of Cleo and her father Aaron play an important role. Gradually, the game connects their fates with the events of the distant past, forming a multi-layered story about the legacy of ancient magic.

A new look at Assassin’s Creed ideas

Despite the completely original universe, many players have already noted visual and conceptual parallels with early Assassin’s Creed. It’s not just about the historical setting, but also about the approach to presenting the story through multiple timelines, exploring ancient mysteries, and combining real historical events with fictional mythology.

However, instead of the confrontation between the Assassins and the Templars, the central theme of the new game is magic, its influence on humanity and the price that has to be paid for the possession of power.

The full release date for 1666: Amsterdam has not yet been announced. At the moment, only the PC version is known.

However, the developers have already opened free access to the game’s prologue in the Steam and Epic Games Store. This fragment allows you to get acquainted with the main mechanics, atmosphere and plot of the project.

And as Patrice Desilet himself noted with a smile, the game has another important argument in favor of getting to know it: players will be allowed to control a cat that will become a full-fledged participant.
