1-inch OmniVision camera sensor supports up to 8K HDR video recording
17.04.25
OmniVision has introduced a new 50-megapixel OV50X CMOS sensor designed specifically for use in flagship smartphone models. The main emphasis in the development is on supporting video recording with an extended dynamic range and improved capabilities in difficult lighting conditions.
The OV50X is built on 1.6 micrometer pixels and uses a one-inch optical format. According to the manufacturer, the sensor can provide the widest dynamic range among available solutions for mobile devices. This is achieved through the use of TheiaCel technology, which allows for single-exposure HDR video with an indicator of 110 dB. This level has no analogues in the smartphone segment yet.
In addition to recording high-quality video, the sensor supports real-time image preview using a single exposure. It also features 4-in-1 pixel binning technology, which allows for 12.5-megapixel images at up to 180 frames per second. Additionally, it can record 8K video with dual analog HDR amplification and touch cropping.
One of the features of the OV50X is support for 60fps video recording with three-channel HDR enabled. It also features four-phase phase detection autofocus (QPD), which provides full frame coverage, which has a positive effect on focusing speed and accuracy.
The sensor is manufactured using PureCel Plus-S technology, which provides a stack architecture that optimizes image capture in low light. The OV50X is expected to become one of the key components in new flagship devices focused on mobile photography with cinematic quality.
