The South Korean judicial system has brought a conclusion to the high-profile dispute surrounding Samsung’s flagship smartphone line of 2022. According to a report by The Chosun Daily, Samsung was ordered to pay monetary compensation following a class-action lawsuit filed by 1,882 consumers. The plaintiffs demonstrated that the manufacturer failed to provide transparent information regarding the Galaxy S22’s system algorithms, which deliberately throttled device performance in certain usage scenarios.
The conflict, which began two years ago, stemmed from a discrepancy between the advertised marketing specifications and the actual user experience. Buyers of premium devices expected maximum performance from the hardware, but instead encountered software-imposed limitations that activated without their knowledge or consent.
Thermal Management Mechanisms in the Galaxy S22 and Their Consequences
The technical basis for the lawsuit was the operation of the pre-installed Game Optimizing Service (GOS). Engineers implemented this utility in the Galaxy S22 firmware to protect internal components from excessive heat. During periods of high load, the system automatically reduced the GPU clock speed and lowered display resolution. While these measures helped keep device temperatures within safe limits, they negatively impacted the smoothness of the gaming experience.
The issue was exacerbated by the fact that GOS algorithms operated in a mandatory mode, leaving users with no option to disable them. Smartphone owners discovered that while the device displayed peak performance in popular synthetic benchmarks, actual gaming applications suffered a significant drop in performance. This led to accusations of data manipulation, as the Galaxy S22’s real hardware capabilities were lower than those shown in reviews and promotional materials.
User Position and Manufacturer’s Software Response
During the court proceedings, plaintiffs emphasized that the service’s name was misleading. The term “optimization” in Game Optimizing Service typically implies performance enhancement, not deliberate software-induced slowdown. Users insisted that when purchasing the Galaxy S22, they were not informed about the existence of a “performance ceiling” that could not be disabled through standard operating system settings.
Following a wave of criticism and declining device ratings within tech communities, Samsung released a software update for the entire Galaxy S22 line. The new patch introduced a dedicated settings section, allowing owners to choose whether to enable power-limiting mode for battery conservation and cooling, or to use the processor’s resources at maximum capacity. However, the court deemed these measures belated, confirming the violation of consumer rights for those who purchased the devices before the changes were implemented.
Legal Scope of the Ruling and Compensation for Galaxy S22 Owners
The current court verdict is legally binding only within South Korea and applies solely to individuals who officially joined the class-action lawsuit. The claim sought 300,000 won per person, roughly equivalent to 200 USD. While the exact final compensation amounts remain confidential, the acknowledgment of wrongdoing by the tech giant establishes an important precedent for the mobile electronics industry.
Throughout the proceedings, Samsung representatives attempted to settle the dispute out of court by offering various compromise options. However, the group of Galaxy S22 owners rejected these proposals, seeking formal judicial recognition of the manufacturer’s misconduct
