Kia is automating factories with humanoids: Atlas robots will begin operating in the US.

Kia is preparing for a new phase of manufacturing automation by introducing humanoid robots at its US facilities. The company plans to deploy Atlas robots developed by Boston Dynamics, with initial implementation scheduled for 2029. The first site will be the plant in Georgia.

Gradual shift from mechanics to intelligence

At the initial stage, humanoid robots will handle basic, repetitive operations that can be standardized. This approach is expected to reduce human involvement in potentially hazardous tasks while improving overall production stability.

Over time, their responsibilities will expand. With the integration of AI technologies, robots will be able to analyze workflows, learn new tasks, and adapt to changing production conditions.

Advancing software-defined vehicles

Alongside factory automation, Kia is accelerating development of software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The company aims to complete its first SDV model by 2027 as part of its long-term strategy.

The initial version is expected to feature Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities, suitable for highway use. More advanced iterations designed for urban environments are planned for release closer to 2029.

Software becomes the core value driver

The automotive industry is increasingly shifting toward software-centric solutions. Infotainment systems, driver assistance features, and over-the-air updates are becoming key elements of the modern driving experience.

The SDV market is currently valued at $250–300 billion and could grow to $1 trillion over the next decade. This model enables automakers to generate ongoing revenue throughout a vehicle’s lifecycle via digital services and subscriptions.

Investments in AI and strategic partnerships

To support these initiatives, Kia is investing over $500 million in artificial intelligence technologies, including computer vision, speech processing, and decision-making systems.

The company is also strengthening partnerships with major tech players such as Google and NVIDIA to accelerate the adoption of advanced digital solutions in both manufacturing and vehicles.
