Intel to Increase Processor Prices by 10% Due to Rising Memory Costs
23.03.26
Intel is preparing to raise the prices of its personal computer processors by approximately 10%. According to reports from the Korean outlet ETNews, the corporation has already alerted its primary OEM partners about the upcoming price hike, which is scheduled to take effect in late March. This adjustment will impact a broad spectrum of mass-market processors rather than just a few high-end models.
The decision to increase prices is driven by escalating costs within the semiconductor sector. The most significant pressure comes from the sharp rise in memory prices observed over recent months. Data from Counterpoint Research indicates that memory costs have surged by as much as 180% compared to the previous quarter.
The primary catalyst for this trend is the massive demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure and the expansion of data centers. This has led to a shift in manufacturing capacity toward AI-specific components, creating a shortage in the consumer PC segment.
With Intel maintaining roughly a 70% share of the PC processor market, any pricing changes have a profound effect on computer manufacturers. Combined, the costs of processors and memory can represent up to 58% of the production cost for a laptop, particularly in the $900 mid-range segment, according to TrendForce. Consequently, rising component costs are expected to squeeze manufacturer margins and likely lead to higher prices for end consumers.
Although official changes to retail prices or suggested MSRP have not yet been confirmed, industry sources suggest that PC manufacturers will be forced to pass these new expenses along. This shift is expected to be most noticeable in the laptop market, where component price fluctuations have the most direct impact on the final retail value of the devices.
