Google Wallet Debuts NFC Payments for Kids

Google is officially rolling out a new feature for Google Wallet, currently available to users in the US. Parents can now create a dedicated, protected balance for children and teenagers under 18. This update effectively turns a child’s Android device into a payment tool, eliminating the need for a traditional physical bank card.

What Is the Google Wallet Kids’ Balance?

The feature allows children and teens to make contactless payments (NFC) via Google Pay on Android smartphones or Wear OS watches. It is important to note that this solution is exclusively for offline in-store transactions; online purchases using this balance are not currently supported.

Parental Control and Management

The system is fully integrated with Family Link, providing parents with complete control over spending. Key management features include:

• Direct money transfers from a parent’s account.
• Scheduling recurring automatic payments (coming soon).
• Setting spending limits.
• Real-time transaction tracking.
• Instant locking and unlocking of the balance when necessary.

Requirements for Setting Up a Kids’ Wallet

To activate the feature, the following conditions must be met:

• The child must be under 18 years old.
• The child must have a verified, supervised Google account.
• A Google Family Group must be established.
• Google Wallet must be installed on the child’s device (Android smartphone or Wear OS watch).

Initial balance setup can only be performed by the family manager via the Google Family Link service or the Google Wallet website. Subsequently, both parents can manage the balance if family sharing settings allow.

This new solution from Google offers a convenient and secure way to introduce children to digital payments. The primary benefit is the elimination of physical plastic cards, which can be easily lost. Through Family Link integration, parents can foster financial literacy while monitoring transactions in real-time and setting limits on daily expenses.
