Apple AirPods Max 2: H2 chip, improved noise cancelling and transition to USB-C

AirPods Max 2

Apple has released an updated version of its over-ear wireless headphones, AirPods Max 2. The announcement was made without prior teasers, making the launch largely unexpected. The device features an upgraded active noise cancellation system, a revised audio architecture, and several additional capabilities. At the same time, the price remains unchanged at $549. Sales are scheduled to begin on March 25, 2026.

Enhanced noise cancellation and audio performance

The model is powered by the H2 chip and incorporates new computational audio algorithms. According to the manufacturer, the effectiveness of active noise cancellation has increased by approximately 1.5 times compared to the previous generation. This improvement also affects the transparency mode, which now delivers ambient sound in a more natural and accurate way.

The design includes a new amplifier with an extended dynamic range. This contributes to clearer sound reproduction and improves low-frequency performance, making bass more precise and stable. Enhancements also extend to mid and high frequencies, which is particularly noticeable when using spatial audio.

Lossless audio support and professional use

When connected via the included USB-C cable, the headphones support 24-bit lossless audio at a sampling rate of 48 kHz. This mode is intended not only for music listening but also for working with multimedia content, including films and games.

The company notes that the combination of lossless audio and ultra-low latency can be applied in professional workflows, particularly when using Logic Pro and other audio applications. A wired connection also enables users to create and mix spatial audio with head tracking.

New features and capabilities

The H2 chip enables support for additional features, including Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts the level of noise cancellation and transparency mode depending on the surrounding environment. The system can also lower playback volume when the user begins speaking.

The headphones also include a Live Translation feature powered by Apple Intelligence, designed for real-time speech translation. In addition, a Voice Isolation mode is available to improve voice clarity during calls.

Availability and battery life
